JD(S) candidate Suraj Revanna has won the Karnataka Legislative Council polls from Hassan with a lead of over 1,400 votes.

Suraj is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. Earlier in 2019, Suraj’s brother Prajwal Revanna had contested from Hassan and been elected as an MP.

Congress candidate Channaraj Hattiholi won the election for Legislative Council from Belgaum constituency, for which counting of votes was held at RD PU College in Chikkodi on Tuesday.

With this victory, the Congress has won back the seat it had lost in the previous election.

The ruling BJP was leading on 12 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections recently held for 25 seats. Opposition Congress was leading on 11 and the JD(S) on one seat.

The election was held on 10 December and recorded over 99 percent turnout.

The Karnataka Legislative Council polls were necessitated on 10 December as the term of 25 incumbent MLCs ends on 5 January. Of the elected members who will retire, the Congress has 16 candidates, the BJP has six and the JD(S) four.

The BJP hopes to wrest a sizable number of seats from the Congress, while both the Opposition parties would like to at least hold on to their positions in the House.
