Two militants take hostage in BJP workers house

Five suspected militants have exchanged fire with security forces on the Batote-Doda highway in Ramban district. After being chased by security forces, the militants had entered a BJP workers house in Batote on the Jammu-Srinagar highway and took him hostage.

Defence spokesperson Lt. Col Devender Anand has said that at about 7:30 am, three suspicious individuals tried to stop a vehicle in Batote on NH 244. The driver of the vehicle was alert. He did not stop the vehicle and informed the nearest Army post. A quick reaction team reacted promptly and contact was established with the suspected militants.

He added that exchange of fire took place. The operation is still on. The suspected militants are hiding in a nullah but they have been cordoned off. Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the place.

Col Anand also said that at around 1 pm, the militants, who are likely to be three in number, entered a house and took a man hostage. Security forces are currently trying to rescue the man before eliminating or capturing the militants, he added. The man has been identified as Vijay Kumar Verma.
