The government has filed the controversial triple talaq bill in Upper House

The government has filed the controversial triple talaq bill for study and passage on Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha.

The bill by the Lok Sabha has previously been passed by a voice vote a walkout by Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, DMK.

The 16th Lok Sabha had the bill but could not pass the Rajya Sabha obstacle. The BJP has declared a switch to its MPs, urging them to secure their attendance in the House.

The bill, to criminalise immediate marriage cancellation by Muslim men and asks jail phase for the guilty.

Many opposition parties had rejected it but the government has said that the bill is a move towards gender equality.

The Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the DMK have directed that it be given to a parliamentary panel for analysis.

Few of the BJP’s associates and the JD(U) have also shown their reservation on the bill.
