Folksam Grand Prix: Gold for Chitra and Sreeshankar, Johnson wins silver

Palakkeezhil Unnikrishnan Chithra is an Indian middle-distance runner who specialises in the 1500m distance. Chithra is the 3rd of 4 children of Unnikrishan & Vasantha Kumari, both of them agricultural laborers from Kerala.

P.U. Chitra won the gold in the women’s 1500m Jinson Johnson bagged the silver medal at the Folksam Grand Prix in Sweden on Tuesday.

Asian champion P.U. Chitra surpassed former Commonwealth Games champion Kenya’s Mercy Cherono and won the women’s 1500m gold with a series best of 4:12.65s at the Folksam Grand Prix in Sollentuna, Sweden on Tuesday.

Cherono, former IAAF World Cross Country champion and silver medallist at the 2013 World Championships, completed 4:13:34s.

Jinson Johnson is an Indian middle-distance runner who specialises in the 800 and 1500 metres event. Johnson is from Chakkittapara town in Kozhikode district, Kerala. He properly trained at the Kerala Sports Council’s sports hostel in Kottayam, before getting into the Indian Army in 2009.

Asian Games gold medallist Jinson Johnson won the silver in the men’s 1500m clocking 3:39.69s as he completed behind Sweden’s Andreas Almgren (3:39.68s).

National record holder Murali Sreeshankar won the men’s long jump gold straightforwardly with an impressive opening effort of 7.93m at the Copenhagen Athletics Games in Denmark. He equalled his season-best time and effort which were in Lyon, France.

Sreeshankar as well had jumps of 7.89m, 7.88m and also 7.61m.
