Section 144 imposed in Bengaluru as mob attacks leave three dead

Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in Bangalore after the violent attack on Pulakeshinagar MLA Akhand Srinivasa Murthy’s house after his nephew allegedly posted a derogatory message in facebook against a particular community.

Three people have died due to the sudden violence that erupted late on Tuesday night. The riot took place in East Bengaluru when the police had resorted to open firing, burst tear-gas shells and lathi charge to take control over the situation. The mob also attacked the KG Halli and DJ Halli police stations.

The tensions rose when MLA’s nephew allegedly posted a derogatory remark on Prophet Mohammed. He denied any such accusations and said that his account was hacked.  The sudden violence led to the calling of several platoons of reserve police who rushed to the location once informed. Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City Kamal Pant said that 110 people have been arrested, including Naveen, who shared the derogatory post.

In his twitter post, the commissioner said, “With regard to incidents in DJ Halli, accused Naveen arrested for posting derogatory posts.. also total 110 accused arrested for arson, stone-pelting, and assault on police. APPEAL TO ALL TO COOPERATE WITH POLICE TO MAINTAIN PEACE”

The next morning, on Wednesday, Karnataka’s Chief Minister, BS Yediyurappa promised to take strict action against the perpetrators and warned that the government will not tolerate such provocation and rumors. “Directives issued against perpetrators and the government has taken all possible steps to curb the situation. Attack on journalists, police, and the public is unacceptable.

Even congress chief form Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, talked to the ANI and said that whatever has happened, congress condemns it and will conduct a meeting soon with party legislators. “I have called a meeting of our legislators at 12 o’clock today. I have spoken to our CLP leader Siddaramaiah, we will give full support to the government to maintain peace and harmony…I strongly condemn the incident and our party also condemns whatever happened last night. It happened due to a person’s post on social media. At this point, it is important to maintain peace.” Karnataka Minister, CT Ravi termed this attack as a planned riot. He said that if not, it was impossible for them to do so much destruction. “We’ll take serious action. It was an organized incident and SDPI is behind it,” he added.
