SC extended the deadline for the Assam’s citizenship announcement

Supreme Court of India on Tuesday stretched the deadline for the announcement of Assam’s citizenship list by a month till Aug. 31, the chief justice stated following the government bid for a longer time to identify unauthorised immigrants.

Citizens of Assam, which borders the majority of Muslims in Bangladesh, have to present documents showing that they or their families existed in the country prior March 24, 971, where people left Bangladesh while its war of independence from Pakistan.

“We extend the deadline for final publication of National Register for Citizens in Assam from July 31 to August 31,” chief justice Ranjan Gogoi stated.

The federal government last week asked more extra time to collect the citizenship register, speaking thousands had given fraudulent documents to suit Indian citizens.
