Red alert announced in Barpeta as the gate opened of hydropower plant in Bhutan

The floods in Assam has affected and now are on alert as on Thursday the water released from the dam of Bhutan’s Kurichhu hydropower plant.

The government has announced a red alert in Barpeta district, for people living on the banks of the Beki and Pahumara rivers asking them to go to safer regions.

The Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) of Bhutan, had stated on Tuesday that it way release water from the dam of 55-metre tall.

Following the release water, it would flow to nearby districts in Assam, officials in the region have warned residents and have inducted important steps during emergencies.

Regions of Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, Bongaigaon and Kamrup districts are expected to be affected by the discharge of water from the dam of Bhutan.

As per DGPC, it released water from the dam by 7 metres and 10 metres on Thursday of about 1200 cubic metres of water per second.
