Mayawati justifies Supreme Court that the statues are “will of the people”

Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party chief has justified the Supreme Court that the statues of herself and the party symbol, the elephant, erecting in public places represent “will of the people”.

Supreme Court’s earlier hearing said, “Madam Mayawati, reimburse to the exchequer the public money you have spent on the elephants,” a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi said.

“We are of the tentative view that you (Mayawati) should pay the public money from your pocket,” Chief Justice of India added. Rakesh Khanna was representing the leader in 10-year-old public interest litigation (PIL) which said misuse of public money for establishing the statues.
