Lok Sabha polls: BJP changes poll narrative in Assam, reaches out to Assamese Muslims

Sonowal in a rally in the district of Lakhimpur recently said, “We should never forget how Lachit Borphukan and Bagh Hazarika saved our land from the Mughals. We need to follow the same ideals of unity and brotherhood to save our land and identity.”

However, the BJP’s electoral narrative has undergone a drastic shift in Assam, the largest northeastern state. Catering to the state’s unique political culture informed by Assamese chauvinism, the BJP changes its lingo from ‘mandir‘ and ‘Mughals’ to ‘jaati‘ (Assamese identity) and ‘maati‘ (land), and the protection of the same from immigrant Muslims from Bangladesh.
