India vs New Zealand

Need to rest the fingers after that carnage, first by Shubman Gill and then by Michael Bracewell. Shubman Gill undoubtedly won the player of the match award, but this match will be remembered for Bracewell’s heroics and his partnership with Mitchell Santner. A 140 from 78 deliveries and he said that it was not his day. Just an example of how cruel cricket can be, and cricket is a direct subset of life that explains us, how it can fallout at times. But you can’t give up and neither will New Zealand. They are expected to come back stronger in the next match.

The two sides will play in Raipur on Saturday. Have a good time until then! We will see you again on Saturday.

India vs New Zealand

Shubman Gill, Player of the Match: I was waiting eagerly to go out and do what I want to do. With wickets falling, at times I wanted to unleash and I’m glad I could do it at the end.

Sometimes when the bowler is on top, you need to make them feel pressure. Need to avoid dot balls, show some intent, and hit hard into the gaps. If you let them take over, it gets easier for them to bowl more dot balls. Which is what I was doing.

Wasn’t really thinking of 200, but once I hit sixes in the 47th over, I did feel that I could. Before that, I was playing what was coming to me.

He (Ishan Kishan) is one of my best mates. I was there when he scored his ODI double-hundred (against Bangladesh) and it was special.

It feels nice when you are wanting to do something and it is coming off on a regular basis. Definitely a sense of satisfaction. It (double ton) sunk in pretty well once Bracewell started hitting those shots and we felt like we could lose the game. The Game went much closer than I expected.

India vs New Zealand

Rohit Sharma, India captain: To be honest, the way he was batting and the way it came on to the bat nicely,, we knew it was not going to be easy to defend that total. We knew that if we bowled well, we would be okay unless we really slipped up with the ball.

Unfortunately, that’s what happened. I did say at the toss that I’d like to see us challenge ourselves, not quite the situation I expected but that’s how it is.

He (Shubman Gill) is going really well. The form he was in, we wanted to make use of it and that’s why we backed him in the SL series, he deserved those chances. Free-flowing batter and it’s quite exciting to watch.

Siraj has been brilliant, not just in this game but in the red-ball, T20 format, and now ODIs of late. Really good to see what he does with the ball. Executing what he wants to do and he is very clear about his plans.

India vs New Zealand

Tom Latham, New Zealand captain: It was an amazing innings (from Bracewell). From 131/6, to come and play an innings like that, for him to put our team in a situation to win the game, it’s outstanding.

Obviously disappointing, we couldn’t get across the line but it was special. When you’re chasing and coming in a pressure situation, to give us a chance to win that game was special.

I think it probably gripped a bit more under lights, India used a lot more cutters into the wicket and it worked. Bracewell batted well and his partnership with Santner was very good to see.

India vs New Zealand

Michael Bracewell: We were just trying to give ourselves a chance (by building a partnership after six wickets). Unfortunately, we fell short right at the end. Once Mitchell (Santner) and I managed to settle, we started believing. We weren’t trying to win it then, just wanted to take it deep to give us a chance.

We left too much to do at the end. You back yourself to get 20 runs in the last over, unfortunately, it wasn’t my day today. They bowled really well in that phase (not able to get going after his century), stuck to their plans, and nailed their yorkers (on losing a bit of tempo after reaching in hundred). It was difficult to get them away at that stage.

A few good overs from Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Shami towards the end have helped India to breathe. But to get this close after posting 349 and getting New Zealand down on the mat at 131/6 in the 29th over, will surely bother India and Rohit Sharma. They were almost outdone by the majestic seventh-wicket partnership between Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell. India have also conceded four century-stands after dismissing 6 wickets since 2022, out of 8 instances overall. A bit of worry there to look upto.

Shardul Thakur has redeemed himself with that last wicket. He had almost done with his career, but that will give him some consideration. A heartbreak for Michael Bracewell. Can you believe it! After brining the Black Caps in the game with such an innings, he has been dismissed LBW to stay short by 13 runs to win the match.

49.2 That has been given out. Plumb in front of the stumps and India will survive. A very good yorker by Thakur, Bracewell shuffles to the off side to play it on the leg side but misses the ball completely as it hits on his shoes. Three reds and India wins! India win by 12 runs. Can you believe it!

49.2 A wide from Thakur now. Bowls a bouncer over Bracewell’s head!
