Government reintroduces Triple Talaq Bill

The Triple Talaq Bill to be reintroduced by the government in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

It is one among 10 other laws introduced in the upper house on Thursday, the beginning of the 17th Lok Sabha. The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) will be the other ordinances introduced by the government.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, was approved by the Union Cabinet on June 12, flagging the way for the bill to be introduced in the upcoming assembly of Parliament.

A Muslim woman can be divorced about instantly has been one of the promises of the Modi government. If the bill once passed, will put an end the practice of talaq-e-biddat, or instant use of triple talaq. It aims to make the offence cognizable.

The government had announced a gathering of political party leaders on June 19, to discuss the plan for the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha.

The Bill introduces a punishment of three years for a Muslim man practising triple talaq and he can get bail only from the judge before the trial starts if his wife agrees.
