Farmers were dispersed with the use of water in the protest

Against the BJP led government at the Centre and Punjab’s Congress government, several farmers held a protest at the Mohali-Chandigarh border for choosing an indifferent attitude towards their difficulty.

The Chandigarh Police stopped the farmers from across the State at the Mohali (Punjab)-Chandigarh border. They had started their march to ”gherao” the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh. The police used water cannons to disperse the farmers.

“We are protesting against the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) – the proposed free trade agreement is detrimental to the interest of farmers. India should keep itself out of RCEP,” Sarvan Singh Pandher president of Punjab unit of Kisan Mazdoor SangarshSmiti said.

Mr.Singh alleged that many farmers have sustained injuries by the Police. Mr.Singh added, “Neither the Centre nor the State government has fulfilled their promises on farmer welfare. Implementation of Swaminathan Commission report, which had recommended fixing the minimum support prices (MSP) for crops at levels at least 50% more than the weighted average cost of production is required urgently because lower prices of agricultural produce disproportionate to the prices of farm inputs have resulted in farmers landing into a debt trap.”

“Farmers suicides across the State are only rising, the government should waive all outstanding loans, whether private or government loans against the farmers and labourers,” he said.
