Former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring justice to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for in the recent skirmish with Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. In his message to the Modi government, he said that the government should not succumb to the “threats and intimidation” in dealing with the neighbour nor permitting “compromise with our territorial integrity”. He also reminded the BJP led government “that disinformation is no substitute for diplomacy or decisive leadership. The truth cannot be suppressed by having pliant allies spout comforting but false statements”.
“At this moment, we stand at historic crossroads. Our Government’s decisions and actions will have serious bearings on how future generations perceive us. Those who lead us to bear the weight of a solemn duty. And in our democracy that responsibility rests with the office of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister must always be mindful of the implications of his words and declarations on our Nation’s security as also strategic and territorial interests,” he said.
Dr Singh added, “China is brazenly and illegally seeking to claim parts of Indian territory such as the Galwan Valley and the Pangong Tso Lake by committing multiple incursions between April 2020 to date. We cannot and will not be cowed down by threats and intimidation nor permit a compromise with our territorial integrity. The Prime Minister cannot allow them to use his words as a vindication of their position and must ensure that all organs of the government work together to tackle this crisis and prevent it from escalating further.”
On Friday, at an all-party meeting, PM Modi had said: “Neither is anyone inside our territory nor are any of our posts captured”. Congress accused PM Modi of ‘endorsing the Chinese position” by saying so and questioned the country head if India had surrendered the contested territory to China.
In a counter-attack against the senior Congress leader’s statement, BJP president J P Nadda said that Dr Singh had “abjectly surrendered” Indian territory to China and presided over 600 Chinese incursions between 2010 and 2013″. BJP leader, who commended the Modi government’s handling of the Ladakhface-off, took a dig at former PM and wrote on Twitter: “Dr.Manmohan Singh belongs to the same party which: Helplessly surrendered over 43,000 KM of Indian territory to the Chinese! During the UPA years saw abject strategic and territorial surrender without a fight. Time and again belittles our forces.”
