An injured elephant died in Dakshina Kannada region

An injured elephant died on Wednesday which was wandering in the reserve forest area near KukkeSubrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada for more than 20 days, a forest department official said.

The 18-year-old elephant was found dead near Balugodu. The post-mortem will be carried and the ivories will be removed prior to burning its body, Tyagaraj, Range Forest Officer, KukkeSubrahmanya said.

He added that the elephant had an injury on the front left leg, therefore it was difficult to move.

The forest department officials had treated the injured elephant on May 10 after calming it down. The injury was healing. The specific reason for the injury is not known, he added.

The RFO dismissed some reports that the elephant died due to fighting with other elephants. After being hurt it was away from all wild elephants.
