Since Saturday morning Mahalaxmi Express has remained held up amid Badlapur and Vangani, Maharastra with about 700 passengers in it, DRM Central Railways said.
A National Disaster Response Force crew has been appointed to rescue the people in the train on board and is assumed to reach the safe zone soon.
The city police and Railway Protection Force have also arrived at the spot where Mahalaxmi Express is stopped.
Initial reports said around 2,000 travellers were stranded.
Due to heavy rainfall in Kalyan-Karjat/Khopoli, Suburban rail services have been stopped at those regions and there is overflowing of Ulhas River within Ambarnath-Badlapur-Vangani.
The IMD predicted remote regions in Maharashtra are expected to see more heavy rain in the next days.
