Pakistan vs England, 6th T20I stat attack: Babar Azam equals Virat Kohli’s record and other numbers

Here’s a statistical roundup of the sixth T20I between Pakistan and England in Lahore, which the visitors won by eight wickets to take the series to a decider.

The seven-match T20I series between Pakistan and England is all set for a Sunday decider as the latter bounced back from consecutive defeats in style with a commanding victory in Lahore on Friday.

Facing a must-win scenario in the sixth match of the series, the Moeen Ali-led outfit produced a clinical display with the bat. Opening batter Phil Salt led from the front with a whirlwind 88 not out as the visitors chased the 170-run target set by Pakistan down with eight wickets and more than five overs to spare.

This was after another stellar display from Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, whose 59-ball 87 not out lent some respectability to the Pakistani innings, helping them set a competitive total after being reduced to 15/2 in the powerplay.

Pakistan had earlier clinched back-to-back thrillers — winning the fourth and fifth T20Is by 3 and 6 runs respectively. England’s powerful riposte, however, ensures the two teams lock horns in the winner-takes-all clash at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium this Sunday.

Along the way, several milestones were achieved and records were broken, which we take a look at in greater detail in our statistical roundup:

— Babar became the joint-fastest to complete 3,000 T20I runs alongside Virat Kohli, both taking 81 innings to reach the milestone.

— With this knock, Babar went past Martin Guptill and David Warner to become the batter with the second-highest number of half-centuries as an opener (23).

— England chasing the 170-run target down in just 14.3 overs is the second-fastest run chase for a target greater than or equal to 170.

— Phil Salt’s 19-ball half-century is the third-quickest fifty by an English batter in the format.

— England’s score of 82/1 at the end of the sixth over is their third-highest total at the end of the powerplay in T20Is, and the second-highest in men’s cricket.

Pakistan vs England: ‘We killed the game straight away,’ says Moeen Ali after eight-wicket win

Moeen Ali was a happy captain after his side thrashed Pakistan in the 6th T20I at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday.

English openers came out all guns blazing, chasing a target of 170 which was expected to be tricky on a two-paced wicket. But the Phil Sault-led assault scripted an England win in 14.3 overs with 33 deliveries to be spared. Moeen Ali was delighted that his side killed the competition straight away.

“Very happy, the way we batted, in particular, was outstanding. We killed the game straight away, shows that if we stick to the processes, we can win. The seamers were very good today. There was also no slogging today, just some good shots off-side and leg-side by our batters,” Moeen Ali said at the post-match presentation.

The series has been levelled once again and the final match will decide the winner on Sunday.

“It’s been a good series, 3-3 heading into the final and all to play for,” the English stand-in skipper added.

There were also some positive signs on Jos Buttler’s return as Moeen Ali spilled the beans in a cinematic manner. “He’s training a lot more now, we don’t know though if we may risk him with the World Cup so close. There are games to play in Australia as well. But you never know, he may turn up day after.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam heaped praise on the manner in which Salt batted in the powerplay. He also said that 170 seemed to be a good score especially after the hosts lost a few early wickets.

After losing a couple of early wickets, we thought 170 was a good score. Maybe we were 10 runs or so short, but the way Salt batted in the first 4-5 overs, they took the game away from us.”

However, the biggest concern for Pakistan remains their middle order which has been consistently failing. And Babar didn’t hesitate to confess the fact.

“The way they used the powerplay was the turnaround today. I think the middle-order needs to step up, they need to take responsibility. As openers, we need to build partnerships to not put the pressure on them,” Babar added.

The two teams will play the final match on Sunday with the series on line.

With unverified reports of Bumrah getting ruled out of the showpiece T20 event doing the rounds, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly decided to step in and clear the air.

Amidst all the drama surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has categorically stated that the Indian pace spearhead isn’t ruled out of the showpiece event yet.

Unverified reports of a dodgy back ruling Bumrah out of the T20 World Cup that begins later in October in Australia sent alarm bells ringing in the Indian cricket community. The BCCI, however, has chosen to remain tight-lipped on the matter and not go beyond ruling him out of the remainder of the South Africa T20I series.

“Bumrah is not out of the World Cup yet. So let’s see what happens,” Ganguly was quoted as saying in a video tweeted by RevSportz.

“Fingers crossed, yes. I don’t know, we’ll find out in the next two or three days. Don’t rule him out yet,” added the former India captain when quizzed about the possibility of Bumrah boarding the flight to Australia.

Bumrah had only recently returned from a long injury layoff during the T20I series against Australia, having missed the Asia Cup after the tour of England and getting rested for the tours of West Indies and Zimbabwe.

He featured in the second and third T20Is against Australia, and proved quite expensive on his comeback with his average and economy reading 73 and 12.16 for the solitary wicket of Aussie skipper Aaron Finch.

Bumrah was rested for the first T20I against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram and the back stress fracture subsequently ruled him out of the remainder of the series, to be played in Guwahati and Indore on 2 and 4 October respectively.

The BCCI then named red-ball specialist Mohammed Siraj as his replacement in the squad.

Gandhi Jayanti 2022: Who named Mahatma Gandhi ‘Father of the Nation’?

A file image of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Image Courtesy: Getty images.

As India marks the 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, people remember the legacy he left behind, besides his values and principles that inspire millions to date. Playing a significant role in India’s fight for independence, Mahatma Gandhi was rightfully called the ‘Father of the Nation’, owing to his determination and selfless sacrifice for the country.

Well, if we speak about the title, it is usually given to the first president of an independent country or someone who has been a driving force behind the establishment of a country. The title of the ‘Father of the Nation’ was given to Mahatma Gandhi in a bid to respect his contribution to the country. As scripted in the pages of history, it was none other than Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who first used the term to signify Gandhi during his radio address following which it was also recognised by the Government of India.

It is pertinent to note that despite having strong differences over the way of leading the freedom struggle, Bose seemed to have accepted Gandhi’s political philosophy, programme, and leadership.

Netaji’s address from Radio Singapore

It was when Netaji during his address through Radio Singapore in April 1944, he not only appreciated Gandhi’s influence on the people of India but also addressed him as the Father of the Nation. He also sought Gandhi’s blessings for the INA and his struggle against the British.

This was not it. Following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his radio address also said, “The Father of the Nation is no more.”

Notably, it was not just his fight for independence that earned him the title but his connection with the people of India that moved the Indian government and made him quite different from other freedom fighters and political leaders.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam added another feather to his cap on Friday, becoming the joint-fastest batter to 3,000 T20I runs alongside Virat Kohli.

And Babar brought up the milestone in style, smashing a towering six over long on off Richard Gleeson’s bowling in the 16th over after Pakistan were invited to bat by England in the sixth T20I at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

The Pakistan skipper moved to 57 with the shot and would add another 30 to his tally, finishing unbeaten on 87 as the hosts finished on 169/6 at the end of their innings. This was his second fifty-plus score of the series, having smashed an unbeaten 110 during a record run-chase in the second T20I in Karachi.

Babar took 81 innings to reach the 3000-run mark in T20Is, the same number of innings Kohli took to reach the milestone. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (101) and India skipper Rohit Sharma (108) occupy the next two spots in the list, while Ireland’s Paul Stirling is fifth — having taken 113 innings to reach the magical number.

Babar, however, is fourth in the list of highest run-scorers in the format, his overall T20I tally reading 3,036 runs at the end of the innings. Rohit leads this list with 3,694 runs to his name. Compatriot Kohli occupies the second spot with 3,663 runs while Guptill is third with 3,497 runs.
