India vs South Africa: KL Rahul named captain for ODI series, Rohit Sharma ruled out

KL Rahul has been appointed India’s ODI captain for the upcoming series against South Africa in the absence of newly-appointed full-time skipper Rohit Sharma, the All-India Senior Selection Committee announced on Friday.

Rohit who is also not part of the ongoing Test series due to a hamstring injury has failed to recover, the BCCI said. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed the vice-captain for the ODI team.

All-rounder Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja were also not selected as they were not fit while senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who is in the team for the ongoing Test series, was rested.

“Rohit Sharma is not fit, he is in rehab and he is not going for the ODI series in South Africa. He is working on and building on his fitness. We never wanted to take chance with him,” chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma said before announcing the team.

“We are looking to groom KL Rahul. He has proved his leadership qualities. KL is the best one who can handle the side.

“Yes, definitely, we are looking at KL Rahul at present, he is an all-format player and he has got good experience of captaincy, and the most important (thing) is we can see he has proved his leadership qualities, this is what all selectors think.

“Rohit is not fit, so we thought KL will be the best one, who can handle the side and that’s why we have good confidence in (Rahul) and we are grooming him.”

Rohit and Jadeja were rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after being ruled out of the ongoing Test series in South Africa due to injuries.

In fact, the selection meeting was supposed to be held earlier — just after the Vijay Hazare Trophy — but it was pushed back only to ensure that Rohit gets a chance to pass the fitness test.

“We thought if Rohit is 100 per cent fit, there is no chance for injuries, then he should not miss an important series. If he is not 100 per cent fit, we thought we will not take a chance and all the five selectors decided not to take a chance,” Sharma said.

All the selectors had a chat with Rohit regarding his fitness.

Rohit, who was named ODI captain earlier this month replacing Virat Kohli, was to travel to South Africa as vice-captain for the Test series which began on 26 December but a hamstring injury during training ruled him out. He had taken charge as T20I captain against New Zealand last month.

On Shami being rested, Sharma said, “Looking at the workload management of our fast bowlers, we are resting him.”

Jadeja was earlier ruled out of the South Africa tour due to a knee injury which he sustained during the New Zealand Test series at home last month.

Sharma said the selection committee took into account the performances of players in domestic cricket and some of the young talents were discussed in the meeting.

“All five of us believe in domestic cricket. A lot of youngsters have already come in the side on domestic cricket performances, especially like Ruturaj, Venkatesh Iyer. Washington Sundar did very well after his injury, came back and performed in domestic cricket, and he made his place in the Indian side for ODIs,” Sharma said.

“A few other young players we discussed are Ravi Bishnoi, Rishi Dhawan, who did well in domestic cricket, in Mushtaq Ali as well as in Vijay Hazare. They will definitely get their chances in future (because of load management). Another dashing batsman Shahrukh Khan was also discussed, Harshal Patel and Avesh Khan also.”

India and South Africa will be playing three ODI matches starting January 19.

India squad: KL Rahul (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj

Assam Police sends out invite for drunk drivers on New Year’s Eve, message goes viral

If your New Year’s Eve plans include drunk and/or rash driving, this invitation is for you. P.S – Stag Entry Allowed, the post read.

A blast site in Guwahati. PTI

As the celebration has begun for the New Year, people are eager to welcome it with drinks, parties and good food. Amid all the excitement, the Assam police took to social media and sent out a strict warning against rash driving and drunkenness. They have sent out the message to curb dangerous traffic violations that take place especially on New Year’s Eve.

The official handle of the Assam police used a few New Year’s Eve internet buzzwords and shared a banner with an invite offering a free entry to their ‘party’. “If your New Year’s Eve plans include drunk and/or rash driving, this invitation is for you. P.S – Stag Entry Allowed,” the post read.

The post urges all to celebrate the new year in a responsible manner. The Assam police, in a sassy way, advised people not to be their guests. From special performance by DJ Lockup, to desserts like CopCake, all are included in their invite.

Assam Police mentioned that the invite is open to those who are not following traffic rules especially, rush drivers, drunk drivers and other eligible violators.

Meanwhile, the same advisory was tweeted by Special DGP (Assam) GP Singh. He informed that do not drive if you are drunk as Assam Police would be firm on their warning.

However, continuing their wordplay and sarcasm, the law enforcement agency mentioned that people can also ‘RSVP’ at their helpline numbers if required. They also added a note saying stag entry is also allowed.

Since the beginning of the holiday week, the police force has been warning people not to break traffic rules. They have also directed people to be more mindful while having fun with friends, family or even alone.

Among the many posts that Assam police shared, the one that is grabbing most of the viewers’ attention is a popular Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham meme that features actors Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya. The meme is all about warning drunk people around the country.

India vs South Africa: Morne Morkel feels Virat Kohli’s side is ‘by far the best team in world’

India’s emphatic 113-run victory over South Africa in the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday added another glittering chapter in Virat Kohli’s fairytale run as a Test captain. This year, India have beaten Australia in Australia, England in England and have put the best foot forward to achieve their maiden series victory on South African soil.

India’s enviable success on overseas tours gave rise to the debate whether they are currently the best side in the world. Reacting on the same, former South African pacer Morne Morkel said India are by far the best side as far as Test cricket is concerned.

“They (Team India) are by far the best team in the world today,” Morkel said during Star Sports’ post-match show. The former South African pacer added that India have worked hard to support their team and that they can go and compete away from home.

Morkel, who has played a lot of cricket against India, said the biggest plus-point of the Kohli-led side is their bowling unit which can take 20 wickets on any track.

“The clear game plan that the bowlers can take 20 wickets; so enjoy this moment,” Morne stated, adding that it was a special feat to be part of. He also commented that “India are definitely leading the way” for him.

The likes of Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah played a key role in helping India bowl South Africa out for 197 and 194 in the first Test. This was only the third time when the Proteas were bowled under 200 in both innings of a Test match on home soil.

India’s win in Centurion was special in more ways than one. This was their first victory at the venue, which has been a fortress for the hosts. India’s stunning victory also ended South Africa’s seven-match winning streak at the SuperSport Park.

India and South Africa will meet again at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in the second Test on 3 January where the visitors would look to seal their historic series win.

Throughout the video, the animal is repeatedly seen biting on the rear bumper of the Mahindra Xylo SUV. At one point, the tiger even managed to get a tight grip on the bumper and pulled the car backwards. The horrifying scene was recorded by tourists who were in other car.

“Well, that car is a Xylo, so I guess I’m not surprised he’s chewing on it. He probably shares my view that Mahindra cars are Deeeliciousss,” tweeted the chairman of Mahindra Group. He also informed that the video was spreading like wildlife on messaging app, Signal.
